6/7 Abstract Sculpture - 2016/17
Sculptures have made a significant impact to our world throughout history. Styles range from realism to abstract. materials range from wood, metal, plaster, found objects and household objects. Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures. MASS and SPACE are the 2 main elements of a sculpture. Mass is the bulk , the solid bits contained within its surfaces. Space is the air around the solid parts, it defines the edges and it can be enclosed forming hollows or areas of emptiness. It can also connect separate parts. Another main element is the surface. Both positive and negative space as well as form were emphasized as students cut and shaped their sculptures from styrofoam cups and plates.
