5/6 Africa Scratchboard
Scratchboard is a a white paper with black ink applied over the surface. Students engrave or scratch off the ink to show textures and white areas. Form is achieved by varying the amount of black that is scratched off. Scratchboard evolved in the 19th century from wood cuts which had to be carved in reverse and printed. Scratchboard was quicker and easier and was originally invented for the purpose of reproduction in printing. 5/6 students drew Africa free-hand and added details that represented Africa. Markers were used to add the color to the scratched images. Painted papers were cut apart and arranged as a frame around their work.
