6/7 Blind Contour Self-Portrait - 2018/19

Blind Contour drawing is a technique where the artist draws through observation without looking at the paper. It is a method intended to train the eye, brain and hand to work together, while helping to see the object in all of its detail. In Betty Edwards' book; "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", she writes that the brain is divided into two parts. The logistical left side which is the dominate side and processes information sequentially, and the right side which is the creative side. She also says it is harder to activate the right side of the brain for people with a dominate left brain. However, we need the right side of the brain to draw from observation.. This is what blind contour helps artists achieve.

Although typically applied as a warm up drawing exercise, 6/7 students created a composition by drawing many blind contour self-portraits on one page. A variety of watercolor techniques were applied to add cohesiveness to the drawings through color
