7/8 Abstract Sculpture 2019/20
Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors and textures. Carving from floral foam was an excellent source for these sculptures due to the ease of carving. Creating an abstract sculpture that represents an emotion through both form and color was the objective of this lesson. Emotions can be symbolized through color; blues-sadness, red-anger, green-calm etc. Line and shape; curved, rounded happier, calmer. Jagged, angular-angry, unhappy unsettled etc. We looked at works from artists; Pablo Picasso, David Smith, Louse Nevelson, Helen Frankenthaler, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore and Isamu Noguchi who each created abstract sculptures in their unique styles. Moore and Noguchi however were the two artists that we took a closer look at. Henry Moore's sculptures utilize both positive and negative shapes in a simple, unobtrusive style. Noguchi applied the element of emotions through shape and color. Applying analogous colors to the sculptures and adding values and tones was a great way to achieve emotions in the sculptures.
